Connecting to the School Community |
As a class, we will of course participate in every school-day event. I will also encourage students to participate in school spirit activities such as crazy sock day (and I definitely will!), and to attend after-school events like school plays. I will also encourage students to join clubs and to participate in school opportunities such as the morning news show. I will try to set up a Reading Buddies program where my students will help younger students with reading/writing and both sets of students will be able to share with each other.

Connecting to Parents and Families |
I will arrange several 'Parent/Family Days' throughout the school year for you to come in and share about yourself, your career, special skills, cultural heritage, etc. I will maintain an open invitation for you to visit or volunteer whenever you would like during the school day, and I am willing to meet you in your homes for any reason if that is preferable for you than meeting at the school. I will provide you with weekly updates on your child's academic and behavioral progress and I will have conferences with you at least once per quarter, or more if you would like. My students and I will update the What's Happening blog area of this website at least once a week with information about what we're doing (and I will have a print version available as well if needed). I have resource links available to you and other parents on this website with topics as far ranging as websites with ideas for cool things (science experiments, nature walks, etc.) you can do with your children to free or low-cost local resources (museums, public pools, outreach centers, content enrichment, historical places, etc.) available to families.

Connecting to the Neighborhood Community |
I will encourage students to attend events in the community, especially those put on by the high schools or colleges that students will likely go to. I will encourage students to volunteer in the community, perhaps by helping to maintain the community garden or by making hats to donate to the homeless shelter. I will do the same, as I live locally, and it would be great if we had a big class presence at big volunteer events.
